Overview
Les Village is a fishermen village that catches ornamental fishes for their living, and like other villages in Indonesia, ornamental fish’ catching is using potassium cyanide, and this has been going on until year 2000. On 2000, a local environment NGO called Yayasan Bahtera Nusantara assist by Yayasa Telapak from Bogor begun to approach the fishermen for not using potas anymore.

That effort finally succeeded. On 2002, fishermen in Les Village no longer use potas. Revolutionized catching method is the first step of the whole concept of Community Based Integrated Marine Eco Trading and Eco Tourism management. The whole entire concept are :
- Stop the destructive fishing method
- Apply Collection Area Management Plan (CAMP)
- Coral reef rehabilitation
- Provide alternative livelihood to the fishermen
The end goal of this concept is to conserve the environment while maintain the livelihood of the people. Besides that, they also do an ornamental fish catching management so overfishing inthat area could be avoided.
Since 2003, with GEF-SGP (Global Environment Facility-Small Grant Program) UNDP’s help, Les Village could found a society’s company which oriented in exporting ornamental fish directly. This also is a part of increasing society’s income.
Environment friendly ornamental fishery also fully supported by Marine Aquarium Council (MAC). Since 2003, Les Village’s fishermen started a coral rehabilitating program. All of these activities are coordinated and conducted by Mina Bhakti Soansari fishermen group. |
